Gambling in the Millennium

Gambling has finally come of age in the new millennium, with the ubiquitous internet placing even the most sophisticated Vegas-style casino games at everyone’s fingertips.  You can play in real-time around a virtual poker table against players possibly sitting at their PCs on the other side of the world.  The action is fast and completely realistic, and the stakes can be high.

Welcome to the world of online gambling, set to go from strength to strength as it draws on the very latest computer technologies to bring you all the fun and thrills of the real thing.

Until recently only the simpler games were possible, but now that fast connections and advanced software are the norm you can play virtually any game imaginable and the numerous sites are in fierce competition for new members.  This means that there are always super freebies on offer, and there is nothing like a few hefty free bets to get you focused on winning.

The great thing about gambling online is that it is completely secure as well as being unbeatably entertaining.  Every resource is channelled into making sure that you have a good time and come back to the site soon.  As well as the bigger games, most sites have a comprehensive range of online slots, scratch cards and arcade games to play for good cash payouts.

Take your time and play some free games before taking the plunge.  If you are not completely happy with a site you can always leave it and try another at any time.

Female gamblers and what they play

Women are more likely to play bingo or buy scratch cards than men, it has been revealed.

The Gambling Commission has shown in recent research that there has been a larger increase in women gambling then men in the last three years.

Its latest survey shows 75% of men gambled in 2010 compared to 71% of women.  However, that figure has increased by 6% for women since 2007 and only 4% for men.

It is not known why scratch cards and bingo are more popular among women.  Bingo has traditionally appealed more to women over men, and often attracts groups of girlfriends rather than mixed groups.  However, scratch cards is a more unusual finding, as the cards are designed to appeal to men as well.

Both types of gambling can offer very generous winnings and neither are particularly intimidating, compared to perhaps visiting a casino or bookmaker, which can be quite daunting for some women, especially if you are going alone.

Bingo and scratch cards can both be played online and while it is not clear whether it is more popular to play them online or in person, figures for online gambling generally are surprisingly low.

Last year only 14% of the population gambled online, compared to 73% gambling in some way, shape or form.  Online gambling can also be sociable as many websites have chat rooms and forums where players can meet like-minded people and share tips.

Have a Flutter on a Horse Race

Horse racing is a hugely popular way of gambling.  Bets can be placed in person at a bookmaker or at the racetrack or online.

Types Of Bets

The easiest bet to make is for the horse to win, but this means you will only win if your horse does.  A place bet gives you more chance of winning, as you will win the bet if your horse comes first, second, or even third or fourth, depending on the number of runners in a race.

There are also more complicated bets where you can try and predict the first three horses to cross the line in a particular order or pick the winners in consecutive races.

Horses with short odds are usually considered safe bets, as they are more likely to win.  However, the return will be less because of the short odds.  A riskier gamble is to bet on an outsider with long odds.

Odds

Odds are normally shown on a tote board or betting shop display and show how much you stand to win for a unit stake if your bet is successful.

At the beginning of the day, the odds are determined by how much the bookmaker thinks people might bet on a horse compared to how much will be bet in total.  This is often based on the horse’s previous form and current condition.

Odds can change during the day depending on how much people are betting on each horse compared to the total amount of bets.

Sweepstakes

In some countries, companies run a sweepstake for their employees for popular races.  Each employee pays the same small stake and is then randomly assigned one horse.  The person assigned the winning horse wins the total stake.

Glorious Gambling Online and Offline

Gambling has at last come of age and shaken off all the old stigmas, with the advent of the internet. The technologies have recently improved so dramatically that every conceivable game has become reproducible in an online version.

Using online casinos is as easy as pie, once you get the hang of performing actions with a mouse.  You can even use your smart phone once you have downloaded some software, so the adventure need never end.  Gambling is natural to humans.  Now anyone, who would like to place bets or learn to play poker but was afraid to ask, can experience a whole new world of interest and excitement from the privacy of their own homes.

To get a realistic short list of some recommended gambling sites, try typing your requirements into a gambling comparison website.  Take a look at each in turn.  Compare things like usability and efficiency of the online help facilities and chat rooms.  People have different preferences, so try some free games before submitting your details.

There is nothing obscure, tricky or difficult about playing a game such as bingo online.  It is simply a matter of getting used to it.  The prizes are typically bigger than in the offline venues, due to lower overheads and greater numbers of players.  This gives a greater opportunity to make a killing.

Guide to Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is one of the most popular types of poker, both offline and online. The main reason is because of its relatively straightforward and easy to learn rules.  Anywhere from two to ten players can play at any given time. There are four rounds of betting in each game.

The Layout

Before cards are dealt, any initial required bets, such as the small and big blind, must be put into the main pot. The first player on the dealer’s left has the small blind. The second player on the left has the big blind. The dealer position moves clockwise after each hand.

Each player has two cards dealt face down. The third player to the dealer’s left starts the first found of betting. In the second round, called the flop, three community cards are dealt face up. Betting starts again.

Round Three and Four

After all second round betting ends, a fourth community card is dealt. This round is called the turn. Betting continues with the bet amount doubling to the game’s highest betting limit. After betting is complete, the fifth community card is revealed. This last round is called the river. This is the final round.

After one last round of betting, players must show their cards. The player with the highest five card hand wins the pot. Should any two players tie, the pot is split evenly. Play then continues with a new hand.

Online Winning Streaks

There are more gambling opportunities to take advantage of now than ever before.  Some of the most fossilised gaming legislation in the world was recently dragged into the new millennium.  This has enabled bookmakers and other gambling outlets to stand proud in the high street and be treated less as pariahs and more as providers of respected and valued services.  No more blacked out windows for them, only gleaming glass façades and plush interiors deploying the latest in satellite and cable technologies to bring sporting results as and when they happen.

On the internet, gambling has undergone a virtual revolution as old names from the high street have opened up substantial global online operations and hundreds of new gambling websites have flung open their portals to admit a new generation of players.

Whether your favourite game is bingo, blackjack or anything in between the internet now offers it all.  Even the most complicated games can be played in real time against multiple players across the world.  Multi-player roulette and blackjack are now as commonplace as online slots.

The typical procedure is to find websites that suit you and your tastes.  Most offer some good freebies for new members such as free bets and other rewards. You can then poke around a bit by playing a few free games to get a feel for things.  Then it is simply a matter of opening an account, making a deposit and away you go.

Online Bingo becomes a popular pastime

Years ago, it may have seemed an alien concept, but online bingo games are now thriving.  New sites are popping up all the time, offering sign-up bonuses, and other rewards for new customers.  The game stays the same, classic eyes-down action, with numbers pulled out by the bingo caller, only now, it’s all electronic.  However, the traditional community aspect of bingo is maintained, with in-game chat functions where players can meet new friends or catch up with old ones, all from the comfort of their home.

This is one advantage over live, land-based bingo, as usually players are required to stay silent during playing time.  It also gives players a chance to play with friends and family hundreds of miles away.

To brush up on the chat lingo, WTG means ‘way to go’, and is commonly used to congratulate lucky winners.  CM stands for ‘chat monitor’ or ‘chat moderator’ – these are the friendly bingo staff, who open the door for you and welcome you with a smile.  They work for the site, and try to create a warm atmosphere for all players.

In between rounds, the CM will also organise chat games, such as Odds and Evens, Dodgeball, Roulette, At the Races, Birthday Bingo, Lucky Gem, Keno and Bullseye, all in order to give the player an enjoyable bingo experience.  The game has become particularly popular among women, both young and old, but of course, men are also more than welcome.  A quick browse around the net will soon find many virtual bingo halls, waiting for that call of ‘eyes down’.

Gambling for Cash

A huge majority of people gamble in a bid to win big money, in hope that their lives could be changed for ever in a mere moment.

It is easy to drop into the fantasy of what it would be like to win thousands, or even millions, of pounds and how you would spend it.  The Gambling Commission, in a recent survey, said 83 per cent of people gambled to make ‘big money’, while 78 per cent said they did because it is fun, 59 per cent said they did it to make money and 51 per cent said because it is ‘exciting’.

The survey also showed that older gamblers are more likely to gamble for monetary or recreational reasons than younger gamblers.

Gambling can often create images of old men in betting shops or youths whiling away hours on pub fruit machines.  But, in fact, it includes everything from playing bingo or the lottery to betting on horses in the Grand National or visiting casinos.

Perhaps, unsurprisingly, the lottery is the most popular form of gambling with 59 per cent of the adult population is the UK admitting to playing the game last year.

People who play online are often enticed by the offers of free cash to get started.  That, combined with the chance to win thousands of pounds, can be a big pull.  Most websites offer virtual casino games where people can even play against each other and exchange tips in chat rooms.

Aside from the winnings for punters, gambling also makes a lot of money for the British economy.  In fact, in 2009/10, the British gambling industry, as regulated by the Commission, generated a gross gambling yield of £5.7billion.

Casinos worldwide

Casinos across the world operate a broadly similar structure although legislation varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In particular, the minimum age of players varies. In the UK, players must be over 18, while in many other countries, the minimum age is 21. Some countries have a lower age limit of 16.

Whatever the minimum age of customer, casinos have a similar business model where their clients gamble on games where chance is a large factor, and an element of skill is also involved. Games which involve skill such as poker, roulette, blackjack, craps or baccarat have reams of literature about them, focusing on how to beat the odds.

There are a few locations globally which are particularly well known for their casinos.

Monte Carlo is probably the best known. While there are a number of casinos in Monaco, the Casino de Monte Carlo is one of the most famous sites for gambling in the world, attracting wealthy patrons from around the globe. Such is the city’s pre-eminence in gambling circles that the mathematical methods for calculating odds are known as Monte Carlo methods. Interestingly, Monaco’s residents are forbidden from entering the casino.

In the United States, Las Vegas is probably the best known venue for gambling and has the highest concentration of casinos per square metre than anywhere else in the country, with the Las Vegas Strip being an eye-popping road of ever more extravagant casino-hotels.

Bingo Fun

It is common knowledge that the old bingo halls have been replaced by glossy, comfortable, clean and smooth-running operations.  These are more like modern sports centres than their forebears, which were often located in cold and unwelcoming church halls. Nowadays, satellite connections allow for inter-hall games that deliver huge cash prizes for the lucky winners, and you’re as likely to find bright young things trying their luck on an evening out as the older, more familiar crowd.

Betting shops in every high street have been similarly transformed, especially since the outdated laws relating to gambling were brought kicking and screaming into the new millennium. People from all walks of life now enjoy placing bets and playing casino games for money, and gambling has become as natural as shopping for the weekly groceries.

Online too there has been a sea change, with gambling and betting sites proliferating, and all the high street big names now have an online presence, virtual equivalents of their bricks-and-mortar setups. In addition there are many new gambling websites going live every day, based purely on the internet. There are so many to choose from that it is largely a matter of using aids such as comparison websites to provide a shortlist of the sites that offer what you are most interested in.

Whether your favourite game is poker, slot machines, bingo, roulette, baccarat, or any other game you will find sites that specialise in it, with lots of offers such as cash bonuses and free bets once you have become a member.
