For those not familiar with the game, Texas Hold ‘em is a variation of poker that begins with an ante, as most forms of poker do. The next step of the game is each player being dealt a pair of cards. To make a complete poker hand, these cards must be combined with the community cards. There are five community cards in total and the series of three community cards that the dealer places face up are called the flop. The remaining pair of community cards is called the turn or the river. 

Though a hand with the flop may be apparent right away, the cards in the river may change the focus of the player’s hand. A straight may appear to be the most likely option at first, but as the round moves on a flush may become the player’s goal.

Once the first three community cards are placed, the players make bets based on their hand. After each card from the river is turned over, bets are made. 

What tends to make this game intense is the fact that so much relies on the community cards, which players have no control over. Smart bets and bluffing must be perfected to become a winning player. 

In terms of hands, the same rules as five-card stud apply. That is, a royal flush is the best hand possible, unless there are wilds called and the lowest hand is a high card. 

However, because there are no draws in Texas Hold ‘em, hands are often won with a pair. A royal flush in this form of poker is quite rare.

Poker, with its combination of chance, skill and drama, gives the competent player a good opportunity to earn substantial money from their play.

While the physical poker table allows players to measure their opponents by their physical “tells”, voice, and general demeanour, the online arena is more about determining other players’ betting, bluffing and folding patterns.  The games tend to run between three and five times faster than what is offered in physical poker rooms.  It is also possible to play on multiple tables at once, which is impossible in a physical poker room.  Some players can effectively play up to eight tables at a time, enabling them to maintain a reasonably stable income by spreading the risk around and taking advantage of less competent players.

Online poker is legal in the United Kingdom, and online poker rooms generate income in a number of ways.  Unlike physical games, there are no dealer tips or other expenses, but there is the traditional, bricks-and-mortar practice of the rake, in which 5% to 10% of the stakes up to a pre-determined limit are paid to the poker room per hand in a cash game.  Otherwise, for pre-scheduled games or tournaments, a 5% to 10% entry fee may be charged.  Additionally, some sites offer side bets, where the players play against the house for real money, with the odds in favour of the poker room. 

At the start of a Hold’em game, each player is dealt two ‘hole’ cards. Then, in the centre of the table the dealer adds the community cards, which all players can use to make their hand. First the dealer will turn three cards over (‘the flop’) followed by one more, (‘the turn’) and a final fifth card (‘the river’). Players must make the best possible hand from any combination of the five community cards and their two hole cards. For example, a player can use two, one or none of their hole cards with three, four or even five community cards. At the end of the hand the winner is the player with the best hand.

Hands are ranked in the following order. 

Royal Flush (the best hand in poker, 10-J-Q-K-A all of the same suit)
Straight Flush (a run of five cards of the same suit in order)
Full House (three of a kind combined with a pair e.g 7-7-7-J-J would be Sevens full of Jacks)
Four of a kind (a set of one card e.g four aces)
Flush (5 cards of the same suit in no particular order)
Straight (5 cards of different suits in order)
Three of a kind (3 cards all the same e.g 8-8-8)
A pair (two cards the same)
High Card (None of the above where the highest card trumps)

If it comes down to a tie, which often happens due to the shared community cards, then the hands are separated by ‘kickers’ – the highest card of the remaining five. For example, if two players have a pair of Kings then the player with the next highest card in his hand will take the pot. Similarly, flushes and straights are ranked by the highest card in the set. If the hands are identical then the pot is shared.

Draw

Draw is any variant where each player is dealt a complete hand before the first betting round. The hand is then developed for later rounds replacing, known as drawing, cards. The most common draw poker game is Five-card draw.

Stud

This is any variant where each player receives a mix of face-down and face-up cards, dealt in multiple betting rounds. The most common stud poker games are Five-card stud and Seven-card stud.

Community card

This is any variant where each player’s incomplete hidden hand is combined with shared face-up cards. The most common community card poker games are Omaha hold’em and Texas hold’em.

Some poker games don’t fit neatly into the above categories and have features of two or even all three variants.

Besides the game variations, there are also rule variations. Some of the more common are listed below.

•    Lowball is where the lowest hand wins the pot.
•    High-low split is where the pot is split between the player with the highest hand and the player with the lowest hand.
•    Roll your own is where players in a stud game can decide which cards are turned up and visible to other players.
•    Twist round is where players can buy another card from the deck.
•    Kill game is where the stakes are doubled after a player wins two pots in a row.

The Layout

Before cards are dealt, any initial required bets, such as the small and big blind, must be put into the main pot. The first player on the dealer’s left has the small blind. The second player on the left has the big blind. The dealer position moves clockwise after each hand.

Each player has two cards dealt face down. The third player to the dealer’s left starts the first found of betting. In the second round, called the flop, three community cards are dealt face up. Betting starts again.

Round Three and Four

After all second round betting ends, a fourth community card is dealt. This round is called the turn. Betting continues with the bet amount doubling to the game’s highest betting limit. After betting is complete, the fifth community card is revealed. This last round is called the river. This is the final round.

After one last round of betting, players must show their cards. The player with the highest five card hand wins the pot. Should any two players tie, the pot is split evenly. Play then continues with a new hand.

Rules and Strategy

It is all very well to watch poker in the movies and on TV, but you cannot play effectively if you do not know the rules, or understand the game.  Read books by prominent poker players for tips on how to play better, and check out a few of the online tutorials available.  Also learn about probability and statistics – this is one case where your high school math will come in handy.

An interesting variation on this theme is the game of Deuce to Seven Draw, where straights and flushes are counted and aces play high. Your best possible hand in this game is therefore 75432.

As such, it is worth knowing the types of tricks that those bent on gaining an unfair advantage could use. There are a variety of ways that cheating can be done.

Collusion – where two or more players work together using a secret strategy – is a common form of cheating. One form of this is called soft play where one of the partners doesn’t make a raise which in ordinary circumstances would have happened. This happens because the individual checking knows that to do so would cost his partner money.

Another form of collusion is called whipsawing in which partners continually raise and re-raise in order to trap other opponents between them.

A third type of collusion is called dumping, where one of the partners agrees to deliberately lose to the other.

A fourth way called signalling is, as the name implies, some sort of messaging system the cheaters have created to trade information.

Although cheating probably occurs more in offline games, it is still possible to cheat online. For example, it is possible for players to discuss their cards without the knowledge of other players simply by sending messages to each other. It is also difficult to spot when someone is doing it.

The way that most people will get the sort of experience that they need is to log onto an online casino and take advantage of the free play that is usually offered. The following tells are some of the most common in the game of poker, but remember that each player has their own set of unique tells and they won’t be the same for every player you come across. 

One of the more common tells is someone checking their chips.  It’s usually a quick and understated move, and means they may have connected – or gotten the community card they needed for a great hand.

You may notice that a player has a shaky hand when they’re betting.  If their hand shakes whilst they are placing their bet it usually indicates that they have a great hand and are about to win big.  It is usually beginners who do this, as they cannot contain their excitement.  Another tell that someone has a good hand is when they ask the dealer whether it is their bet or what the bet is.  If a player is rude to you after a bet this can also mean that they’ve got a good hand and want to annoy you so that you’ll call them.  However, if they are too polite after betting it normally means that they are bluffing.

There are many different tells and each person is different, so whilst you are playing a game of poker always pay attention to all of the players around the table.  You should make a list of tells you’ve noticed when playing, as it will help you in all your future games.
